THE BOOK OF JAMES |
Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials. -- 1:2 Blessed is a man who perseveres under trial; for once he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him. -- 1:12 Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow. -- 1:17 But everyone must be quick to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger; for the anger of man does not achieve the righteousness of God. -- 1:19-20 But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves. -- 1:22 Pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world. -- 1:27 For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all. -- 2:10 You believe that God is one. You do well; the demons also believe, and shudder. -- 2:19 Let not many of you become teachers, my brethren, knowing that as such we will incur a stricter judgment. -- 3:1 But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering, without hypocrisy. -- 3:17 You do not have because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it on your pleasures. -- 4:2-3 Friendship with the world is hostility toward God. -- 4:4 Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. -- 4:7-8 Humble yourselves in the presence
of the Lord, and He will exalt you.
To one who knows the right thing to do and does not do it, to him it is sin. -- 4:17 The Lord is full of compassion and is merciful. -- 5:11 But above all, my brethren, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or with any other oath; but your yes is to be yes, and your no, no, so that you may not fall under judgment. -- 5:12 The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much. -- 5:16 My brethren, if any among
you strays from the truth and one turns him back, let him know that
he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save
his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins.

Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him. -- 1:2-5 Let no one say when he is tempted, "I am being tempted by God"; for God cannot be tempted by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone. But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust. Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death. -- 1:13-15 But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his natural face in a mirror; for once he has looked at himself and gone away, he has immediately forgotten what kind of person he was. But one who looks intently at the perfect law, the law of liberty, and abides by it, not having become a forgetful hearer but an effectual doer, this man will be blessed in what he does. -- 1:22-25 What use is it, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but he has no works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister is without clothing and in need of daily food, and one of you says to them, "Go in peace, be warmed and be filled," and yet you do not give them what is necessary for their body, what use is that? Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead, being by itself. But someone may well say, "You have faith and I have works; show me your faith without the works, and I will show you my faith by my works." -- 2:14-18 The tongue is a small part of the body, and yet it boasts of great things. See how great a forest is set aflame by such a small fire! And the tongue is a fire, the very world of iniquity; the tongue is set among our members as that which defiles the entire body, and sets on fire the course of our life, and is set on fire by hell. For every species of beasts and birds, of reptiles and creatures of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by the human race. But no one can tame the tongue; it is a restless evil and full of deadly poison. With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the likeness of God; from the same mouth come both blessing and cursing. -- 3:5-10 Come now, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, and spend a year there and engage in business and make a profit." Yet you do not know what your life will be like tomorrow. You are just a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away. Instead, you ought to say, "If the Lord wills, we will live and also do this or that." -- 4:13-15 Is anyone among you sick?
Then he must call for the elders of the church and they are to pray over
him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; and the prayer offered
in faith will restore the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him
up, and if he has committed sins, they will be forgiven him. Therefore,
confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another so that you
may be healed. The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much.
